Commemorative Postage stamp on Old Seminary, Kottayam has been released by the Hon’ble President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhawan on 21st April, 2015.
Speaking on the historic occasion, the President Shri Pranab Mukherjee lauded the significant contribution made by Old Seminary in the process of socio-economic development by spreading learning and education.
The foundation of Orthodox Theological Seminary (OTS), known as Old Seminary or Cottayam Syrian College, was laid in February, 1813. The Seminary is run by the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, the St. Thomas Christians, commonly known as ‘Malankara Nazranis’.
The structure depicts the rich architectural beauty of the 18th and 19th centuries.According to the Department of Archaeology, Government of Kerala, the Old Seminary Building is approximately 200 years old. It is one of the earliest public institutions in Kerala which has a historical significance in the context of Kerala’s socio cultural history.
Department of Posts is happy to issue a commemorative postage stamp on the occasion of the Bicentenary celebrations of Old Seminary, Kottayam.
